South African wines have a fascinating history that dates back centuries,to 1659 when the first bottle was produced in Cape Town by Jan van Riebeeck, the founder and governor of the region. Despite being considered a “new world” wine producing country, South Africa has been making wine for a long time, combining elements of both the Old World and New World styles.
The country’s diverse wine regions, such as Franschhoek, Stellenbosch, and Walker Bay, offer a wide variety of wine styles: from blockbuster reds made from Shiraz, Malbec and Bonarda, to full-bodied Chardonnays and crisp Sauvignon Blancs. Chenin Blanc, also known as Steen, is a signature grape of South Africa and contributes to their unique wine portfolio. The terroir of South Africa, with its ancient soils, two oceans, and breathtaking natural beauty, adds to the allure of their wines.
However, the grape variety that is most closely associated with South African wine is Pinotage. Pinotage is a red wine grape that was created in South Africa in 1925, crossing Pinot Noir and Cinsaut (also known as Hermitage). It has since become the signature grape of South Africa, typically producing deep red wines with smoky, bramble fruit and earthy flavours.
As the country continues to develop, Franschhoek is set to become South Africa’s first wine region to establish a classification system, further enhancing the reputation of their wines.
