Hermitage is the most celebrated appellation in the Northern Rhone and one of the most esteemed names in the world of wine! Boasting a minuscule 120 hectares of vines planted on one south-facing granite hillside situated above the town of Tain and overlooking the town of Tournon (just across the Rhône river) Hermitage holds historical significance as the birthplace of Syrah; and is known for producing some of the finest red wines in France, with the potential to age for many decades.
The appellation primarily focuses on the production of red wines, with Syrah being the only permitted red grape variety. The wines are powerful and deep in colour, displaying a beautiful balance of dark fruit flavours, such as blackberry and black cherry, along with hints of spice, earthiness, and a touch of smokiness. The firm tannins provide structure, while the acidity ensures freshness and longevity. The best examples of Hermitage have will age and evolve gracefully over several decades.
In addition to the renowned red wines, the Hermitage appellation in the Northern Rhône region also produces limited quantities of breathtaking white wine the white wines crafted from two grape varieties: Marsanne and Roussanne. The Marsanne grape typically dominates in a white Hermitage blend, adding depth and structure to the wines. Marsanne imparts flavours of stone fruits, such as apricot and peach, along with hints of honey and nuttiness. Roussanne, on the other hand, adds aromatic complexity and lends notes of floral nuances, pear, and citrus. Just like the reds the white Hermitage wines are often fermented and aged in oak barrels, which further enhances their complexity and adds a subtle touch of cedary or toasty aromas.
There are many big names and highly revered winemakers in Hermitage such as Chave, Jaboulet and Chapoutier. However, we have had the great fortune to work with Domaine Marc Sorrel for many decades. Marc & now his son Guillaume Sorrel who has taken over the estate are arguably two of the most talented winemakers in the Hermitage and Crozes-Hermitage region and their traditional approach, gives an old-fashioned style of Hermitage, which is full, well-structured, and very long-lived.
