After many years, and many thousands of miles spent toing and froing across ‘le Jardin de France’ (The Loire Valley), one area that consistently captivates, and one we always return to, is Anjou. Although regions like Sancerre may be more widely recognised, the variety and quality found in the undulating hills north and south of the town of Angers, is simply astounding. A visit here never fails to tantalise our taste buds and leave us gleefully giddy.
One cannot discuss Anjou without mentioning Chenin Blanc, the crown jewel grape of the appellation. This versatile white grape thrives in Anjou’s limestone-rich soils, producing wines that range from crisp and dry to lusciously sweet. Known for their remarkable acidity and complex flavor profile, Anjou Chenin Blancs often exhibit notes of honey, quince, and citrus, making them a delightful choice for both aperitifs and food pairings.
Anjou’s red wines are dominated by the elegant and expressive Cabernet Franc grape. Grown in the region’s gravelly and clay soils, these wines are characterized by their aromatic intensity and refined tannins. Expect flavors of red berries, violets, and subtle earthiness in Anjou’s Cabernet Franc wines, which can be enjoyed in their youth or matured gracefully over time.
Domaines to keep an eye on in this region are the gorgeous whites of Chateau de la Roulerie and the stunning organic sparkling wines of Domaine Vincendeau.
