Weinviertel in the northeast corner of Austria is the largest wine-growing region in Lower Austria with over 13,000 hectares under vine. Grüner Veltliner dominates almost half of the region, with several other grape varieties such as Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Blauer Portugieser and Traminer grown too. The local Grüner Veltliner is famous for having a particularly peppery aroma, and sparkling wine is also produced in the region. Although very well known for producing excellent quality entry-level wines, Weinviertel’s extensive region produces exceptional high-end wines as well, along with excellent Eiswein from a wide range of grape varieties.
Weinrieder are one of the top estates in Austria, and they cultivate 20 hectares of vines in some of the most highly prized south and southwest-facing sites in the area. Being this far north, there is immense focus on the entire growing cycle and really pushing the extremes in terms of harvest while preserving the quality of the fruit. The wines embody an incredible fidelity in terms of showing vintage instead of relying on adjustments or trends. The predominately loess and loam soils impart minerality to compliment the characteristic “pepper” spiciness found throughout the region. Early and consistent work in the vineyards, including an extremely rigorous green harvest, promotes thick skinned able to withstand a long hang time.
