Burgundian Chardonnay and Pinot Noir – An Autumnal “air de famille”
The two perfect foils for Autumn’s spoils
Description
As summer gives way to crisp mornings, russet leaves and the first real chill in the air, few wines feel more naturally suited to the season than Burgundy’s two great varieties: Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
There is something inherently autumnal about Burgundy. Chardonnay’s combination of orchard fruit, subtle spice, creamy texture and refreshing acidity makes it a wonderful partner for the season’s richer dishes, while Pinot Noir seems almost tailor-made for autumn – bright red fruit, earthy savoriness, gentle spice and silky tannins perfectly complementing roast poultry, game, mushrooms, truffles and hearty stews.
For this autumn, we’ve selected three thrillingly characterful and seasonal wines from three unique and exceptional Burgundian domaines.
Our mixed case of six red and white Burgundy contains two each of the wines listed below.
Domaine Moissenet-Bonnard
Based in Pommard, Domaine Moissenet-Bonnard is a family domaine with vineyards extending across some of the Côte de Beaune’s most celebrated appellations. Their Les Monts Poulains Bourgogne Blanc comes from a small parcel in Pommard with deep, clay-rich alluvial soils. Hand-harvested and aged for 12 months in older oak, it combines generosity with freshness and finesse.

A beautifully textured Chardonnay, showing aromas of hazelnut, butter, white flowers, apricot and peach, with subtle spice from its oak élevage. The palate is broad and creamy yet firmly structured, with lovely persistence and a refreshing finish. A superb autumn white for roast chicken, creamy sauces, fish and cheese.
Domaine Jean-Michel Giboulot
One of our long-standing Burgundian favourites, Jean-Michel Giboulot farms around 12 hectares in Savigny-lès-Beaune, organically and with a restrained, low-intervention approach. His wines beautifully bridge traditional Burgundy and a more contemporary elegance and purity. His Savigny-lès-Beaune comes from old vines (35-60 years old), situated in five different ‘Lieux-Dits’ within the appellation, and is fermented in stainless steel before spending eleven months in oak barrels.

Elegant and understated, with blackberry, cherry and strawberry fruit alongside delicate floral notes and touches of savoury intensity. The palate is beautifully poised, with fine tannins, subtle spice and a lingering finish of peonies and earthy undergrowth. A wonderfully autumnal Pinot Noir – graceful enough for roast poultry but with sufficient depth for game and mushrooms.
Domaine Troussard-Prin
A particularly exciting young domaine, Domaine Troussard-Prin is run by Célestin Troussard, whose wines have already attracted considerable attention. His 2023 Bourgogne Côte d’Or comes from 60–80-year-old Pinot Noir vines, with 12 months in oak, and delivers remarkable depth for its appellation.

Rich yet wonderfully fresh, with ripe griotte cherry fruit, smoky woodland aromas, subtle game, sweet spice and jasmine aromatics. The palate combines juicy fruit with elegant floral notes, fine tannins and a savoury, earthy and meaty complexity. A superb bottle for the autumn table – especially with roast duck, game, charcuterie or earthy mushroom dishes.
