The house of Vilmart is situated in the tranquil hamlet of Rilly La Montagne and is run today by the charismatic and talented, Laurent Champs. Laurent represents the 5th generation of this distinguished house, which was established in 1890 by Désiré Vilmart. He is driven and guided by the simple belief that to make great Champagne, one must first focus on making exquisite wine, which the ensuing bubbles only enrich and enhance.
With 11 hectares of premier cru vineyards, on chalky and limestone soils, Laurent works meticulously in the vineyard and cellar. Laurent vinifies and matures the wines in oak and chooses not to employ malolactic fermentation, as he feels that it is detrimental to the overall finesse, freshness, tautness, and purity of aromatics that he strives for. However, none of Laurent’s Champagnes taste of oak, but there is an added level of complexity and character that, it seems only the wood can supply, providing body, roundness, and subtlety.

A second feature of Laurent’s process is the longer than usual ageing sur latte – frequently between 3-8 years depending on the cuvee, prior to degorgement. 3-4 years for the non-Vintage and 5 to 8 years for the Vintage. This extra time spent on the lees, further adds to the overall complexity in his Champagnes.
Except for the Pinot Noir dominated Grande Reserve, all Laurent’s white Champagnes are based upon Chardonnay, which is unusual for an area well known for the inclusion of Pinot Meunier.
Laurent’s vineyards are all classified as Premier cru, his finest and oldest vineyard come from La Blanche Voie, a famed lieu-dits, which provides the grapes for Vilmart’s most prestigious champagne – Coeur de Cuvee (frequently referred to as ‘poor man’s Krug).
Vilmart, undoubtedly remains one of the brightest jewels of our portfolio. With a meticulous attention to detail and a fine-tuned intuition for his craft, Laurent continues to re-invent the meaning of the term, ‘perfection’.
