Domaine la Barroche is one of the most impressive Châteauneuf producers to have emerged on the wine scene here in the previous two decades. Ironically, it is also one of the oldest properties, with a family that’s been in the region since the 1400s.
Since 2002, this 14-hectare estate has been run by the ever smiling and humorous, Julien Barrot, along with his sister Laetitia. The last 15 years or so have been momentous for both. In the short time that Julien has been at the helm, the wines have taken flight as some of the best in the area and laurels and gongs have been heaped upon his shoulders – deservedly so.
His father cultivated his vineyards with a passion and dedication, but the wines he made were simply sold ‘en vrac’, to be lost into indifferent negociant blends.
Julien made the decision to bottle – always a brave move, shunning instant income and ready-made markets. His efforts were instantly rewarded, his wines now in demand globally.
The vineyards are all in the northern sector and boast a high average age, with many of the vines now approaching 100 years.
Stylistically, Julien produces a more modern style of Chateauneuf, wines with wonderful clean, unctuous fruit and intense perfume.
Ageing is in a mixture of foudre and demi-muid. Crafted as non-interventionalist as possible, with all stages of vinification being moved through via gravity, in a newly built, state of the art temperature-controlled cellar.
In the last couple of years, Julien has also decided to include more stems, adding more freshness to these utterly stunning Chateauneuf wines.
