One of the founding family cellars of Rasteau, Grand Nicolet, got its start in 1875, when Joseph Nicolet tended just over two acres of vines in the village. Winemaking in earnest began in the 1920s and through the decades, the domaine grew, as winemaking duties were passed from father to son and daughter.
Today, winemaker Jean-Pierre Bertrand organically tends to over 70 acres of some of Rasteau’s oldest vines, by hand. The sun exposure in this appellation, combined with the strong current of the Mistral wind, allows the grapes longer hang time on the vines, reaching incredibly high levels of ripeness.
Here old-vine Grenache takes on a darker, sultrier demeanor, with notes of pepper and liquorice. Many examples of Rasteau can veer into heady, dense and powerful territory, lacking much in the way of approachability and elegance.
However, although being deep and rich, Jean-Pierre’s wines are never over extracted and big for the sake of it, characterised first, by their purity, perfume and harmonious balance. There is also an enticing spicey southern richness that makes them far too easy to drink!
These are honest wines, aged mostly in cement tank, that showcase the rich fruit of the south, with a spiced energy that make them far too easy to drink.
The Rasteaux Ambre is a stunning Vin Doux Naturel! Aromas of dried fruits, honey and hazelnut are followed by a symphony of dried fruits enhanced by a lifting acidity which gives it freshness and a seamless line.
