If there is a harder working team in the village, we have yet to find them. Marie Giraud, along with her marathon running, mountain climbing brother, Francois, never stop. Like Julien Barrot, they took over from their father, Pierre, in 2003. With the family wines being sold off to co-operatives in bulk up until 1998.
We have been fortunate enough to work with Marie and her brother Francois ever since they took over the wine-making duties of Domaine Giraud, their family estate, 17 years ago. Splitting the winemaking and the viticultural duties between them, they went about making the changes necessary, to improve the quality of their wine. Since then and irrespective of vintage conditions, their wines have been amongst the most profound and characterful in Chateauneuf-du-Pape.
Their vineyards are situated to the south of the village, in and around the ancient vineyard of Gallimardes.
Nothing is left to chance here. A table de trie is used to sort the grapes at harvest and strict selections take place in the winery. Stylistically, the wines here strike a truly harmonious balance between wonderful southernly richness, but also, they are remarkably delicate and silky.
Dense and supple fruit flows easily across the palate in these full-bodied, silky wines that show great richness, depth, and length, without excess weight. Particularly in the sensational, Les Grenache de Pierre, produced from 100% grenache vines approaching 100 years of age. This wine exhibits cherry and raspberry notes, with hints of citrus zest and briny notes on the long, silky, almost ethereal finish. This cuvée deserves to be mentioned among the top, 100% Grenache wines of the appellation. If you are looking for a Chateauneuf-du-Pape with real elegance and finesse then look no further than Domaine Giraud.
