The name of this charmingly picturesque and beautifully well-maintained domaine has its origins in the Middle Ages when the property served as a toll point. Traditionally, travellers were required to pay copper patas – an old Provençal currency – in order to pass from Vaison to the neighbouring village of Villedieu. An old sign on the outer wall of the house reading Octroi de Vaison attests to the important historical significance of the property in the distant past. These days, passers-by have a much happier and more egalitarian reason to part with their hard-earned copper, silver and paper, namely that of exchanging them for expertly made wines that are brimming with depth, character, and are a pleasure to drink, consistently defying their more-than-reasonable price point.
These days Domaine du Gros Pata comprises 40 hectares spread across 3 appellations – Vin de Pays de Vaucluse, Côtes-du-Rhône, and Vaison-la-Romaine Côtes-du-Rhône Villages – on hillside vineyards of mainly clay, limestone and sandy soils, majoring in Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Carignan for reds and Grenache Blanc, Clairette, Bourboulenc and Viognier for whites. In recent times, their ongoing commitment to sustainable farming and environmentally friendly cultivation practices has seen them awarded the status of HVE (of high environmental value).
The indefatigable, effusive and extremely hardworking Sabine Garagnon is the fifth generation of the Garagnon family to run the domaine, having taken the reins back in 2000 after the passing of her grandfather. As well as holding the mantle of winemaker and chief promoter of the domaine’s wines, Sabine is also AOP Vaison-la-Romaine President, was inducted into the Commanderie des Côtes-du-Rhône in 2025 and is a member of Femmes Vignes Rhône, the association championing women winemakers in the region. One wonders where she finds the time and energy to fit it all in. However, anyone that has had the pleasure of meeting Sabine cannot help but be struck by her boundless enthusiasm, love, passion and pride for her family, their shared history in the region and all that the surrounding Vaison-La-Romaine countryside has contributed and continues to contribute to their brilliantly made and expressive wines.
The white Côtes-du-Rhône, a blend of Grenache Blanc, Clairette, Bourboulenc and Viognier, is luscious, clean and fresh with a palate of stone fruits and ripe citrus, zesty acidity, and a honeysuckle and almond finish. The ‘Cuvée Lucas’ Côtes-du-Rhône Blanc, a blend of Viognier and Bourboulenc, takes it up a notch in terms of richness, having been aged in oak barrels for 4 months, and shows a generously rounded palate full of buttery, caramelised flavours of roasted peach, apricot and dulce de leche, all freshened up with lively acidity. The red Côtes-du-Rhône, a blend of Grenache, Syrah, Carignan, and Mourvèdre, spends 6 months on oak and has a lovely rounded and creamy texture, with good tannic structure, red and dark fruit flavours of plum and cherry, punctuated by a well-judged seasoning of wooded savoury spice and herbaceous nuances. Having spent a year in oak, the ‘Cuvée Impériale’ Côtes-du-Rhône Rouge, a blend of Grenache and Syrah, has a meaty and spice accented style, with hints of liquorice and charcuterie surrounding deep, dense and pure cassis, plum and blackberry fruit, with good acidity and soft, rounded tannins.
