In a little over ten years, the brothers Vincent and Pascal Maurel, transformed this once moribund estate into arguably the finest domaine in the appellation. The wine property is similar in size to Beaucastel and also has some spectacular parcels of old vines, its centurion-holders mainly situated on the Crau plateau. The winemaking here is traditional, yet the wines themselves seem to marry tradition and modernity with effortless aplomb. Their cuvee’s, Deus Ex Machina and La Combe des Fous are, without doubt, two of the greatest expressions of Chateauneuf-du-Pape. 2017, much like 15 and 16 was another blockbuster vintage, resulting in lots of power and concentration.
This could easily have been an overly extracted and tannic wine in the wrong hands, however, the 2017 Clos St Jean, possesses that rare mix of incredible power and richness, paired with a sense of weightlessness and elegance. Offering silky red fruit, kirsch, garrigue and graphite notes as well as a full bodied, rounded and seamless profile, the 2017 is amongst the best CDP tradition cuvées produced for this vintage. Pascal Maurel has crafted a wine that is a joy to drink now, but that has the potential to age majestically.
