Marsala Hogshead Finish

The nose opens with a pleasant combination of astringent green fruit and sweet Marsala notes. Hints of pepper, smoked bacon, umami and soy sauce follow. It’s an odd nose for a Balblair, but it works. Late peanut stay and vanilla.
Intense, drying tannin to start but the sweetness of the Marsala offsets. Like the nose it’s quite savoury with toffee, soy sauce, vanilla, malt and dried fruit. Masked but chewy and malty finish which leaves a lovely umami coating to the tongue.
Water emphasises the astringent green fruit. Less Chinese now and more Scotch! The palate is still full and juicy with a little more emphasis on the winey Marsala. Like the nose it’s more ‘conventional’ now. Good length with toffee and pepper finish. Light boiled sweets after-taste.
