Superb Sauvignon Selection
Sauvignon - So Why Not?!
Description
Just as fashions come and go, different grape varieties have their time in the spotlight, becoming the flavour of the month, or in some cases, several years.
The Sauvignon Blanc has long been a favourite of many, albeit in various guises. The classic of course, has always been the beautifully fresh, flinty and elegant wines from Sancerre and Pouilly Fume, followed by the more openly aromatic and fruit driven examples from New Zealand’s Marlborough region. There are other people however, for whom the Sauvignon is rather like that band that nobody dare admit to appreciating, but which has everybody flooding onto the dance floor after the first few bars.
Whether you are an unabashed, avid fan, or a closet admirer, this tantalizing selection is one not to be missed.
2023 Sauvignon Blanc, Domaine des Forges
Stephane Branchereau of Domaine des Forges is one of the most highly acclaimed producers of the hedonistic, Coteaux du Layons. However, he also crafts a range of wonderfully pure and expressive single varietals, from vineyards surrounding the domaine. These are real gems, which offer exceptional value, including wines from the Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc and this refreshingly vibrant, Sauvignon Blanc. The perfect glass of wine to enjoy with friends, as an aperitif, or with delicate fish and light poultry dishes.
2022 Sancerre, Daniel Crochet
We had been in search of our ‘perfect’ Sancerre for many years, before we discovered ‘the one!’. Situated in the sleepy village of Bue, Daniel Crochet has 9 ha of prime sited vineyards, comprising 3 ha of Pinot Noir and 6 ha of Sauvignon Blanc, with an average age of 55 years. This is a beautifully clean, classically styled Sancerre, combining the subtle, but distinctive flinty minerality, fine acidity and long fine finish. A perfect partner to salmon, goats cheese and summer salads.
2019 Sauvignon Il, Vini Grillo Iole
The charming estate of Vini Grillo Iole, focusses on their prized indigenous varieties, but also produce a couple of incredibly exciting and individual examples of Sauvignon Blanc. The fabulous Sauvignon Il, is produced from late harvest grapes with extended ageing in used casks. Vinified dry, but with a luscious ripeness of fruit. The classic ‘green’ Sauvignon notes give way to more exotic, stone fruits, combined with subtle spices and hints of vanilla. Beautifully harmonious and seamless on the palate, but not at all heavy, with a fine balance of acidity and elegant finish. Delicious!
