For this week, we are pairing two irresistible and stylish sparkling wines from the exceptional family house of Mestres.

The Mestres family have been producing wine in Penedes since 1312, releasing the first Champagne method sparking wine in 1928. In complete contrast to the insipidly neutral qualities of the mass-produced Cava that has flooded the markets over the last decades, these Gran Reserva Wines of Mestres offer truly amazing vinous complexity. Their single vineyard cuvees, are amongst the most excitingly complex, sparkling wines of the world!

The wines we have selected for this May offer, represent some of their more delicate cuvees, including an irresistibly delicious and refreshing rose brimming with tantalizing red fruits, together with our special ‘nod’ to VE day, the exceptionally stylish and vibrant Visol. Indeed, Mestres were the pioneers, producing their first zero dosage, ‘Visol’, (wine on its own), in the historic year of 1945.

 

2020 Gran Reserva Premium Rosat, de Mestres

Introducing a rosé that embodies understated elegance. With a soft blush hue and subtle copper undertones, this wine captivates without being ostentatious. Delicate carbonic bubbles add a touch of effervescence, creating a lively and refreshing experience. The aroma reveals a bouquet of red fruits, offering a pleasant sweetness balanced by a subtle acidity. Notes of yeast and raw almonds add depth and complexity, elevating this rosé to new heights. This is a wine that invites you to savour every sip and enjoy the company of good friends.

 

2016 Gran Reserva Premium Visol, de Mestres

This amazing, family-run estate can trace its origins back to the 13th Century and their sensational, Gran Reserva Cavas represent some of the most phenomenal, sparkling wines of the world today. First produced in 1945, the ‘Visol’, translating as, ‘wine on its own’, was the first zero dosage, Brut Nature Cava. A blend of Macabeu (35%), Xarel·lo (45%) and Parellada (20%), the 2016 combines floral and apple and fresh and dried apricot fruits, together with enticing complexities of baked bread, honey, vanilla and hints of balsamic. The irresistibly fine and well-integrated moose enhances the sumptuous palate, elevated even further by vibrant and wonderfully taught acidity. Gloriously balanced with a long stylish finish.
