The nose opens with the typical JD sweet caramel corn but the higher abv has kicked up the rye and adds some nippy dark spices. Hints of vanilla, coconut, dark chocolate along with some subtle astringent/ bitter notes. Overall it’s still quite sweet but the balance isn’t too bad.
The palate is soft and opens with the caramel corn and vanilla oak. Bitter rye spices move in quick brining dark chocolate, vanilla and subtle herbal spirit notes. Long, very spicy and youthful with a touch of rose petal marc in the finish. Wow! That’s a serious finish and I have to say that I’m impressed, although I should be given it retails for the same price as the single barrel.
