Domaine des Pierres Sèches 2018 Vin de France Pur Ju
Tasting Note
Sylvain’s 2018 VDF ‘Pur Ju’ is quite simply an absolute joy to drink. It is a slight, but welcome diversion from his usual single varietal cuvées of Syrah, as an unusual, but inspired mix of Syrah and Gamay. Despite being a quirky pairing, the two varieties complement each other remarkably, resulting in a breathtakingly fragrant and bright nose of sweet black fruits and red cherries and a palate that sings with pure black fruits and subtle sweet spice.
This truly is a delicious ‘punnet of fruit in the glass’ in the very best way possible. The wine is structured and dense but also juicy, silky and elegant at the same time. Harmoniously balanced with velvety tannins, there is also a freshness and vibrance to the wine which simply makes it a joy to drink. Do not be deterred by the ‘VDF’ on the label, simply a technicality, this is a far cry from a humble ‘Vin de France’. Once the bottle is opened, allow it to breath for 15 minutes, and then simply savour a sumptuous glass of ‘Pure Joy’ from Sylvain Gauthier.
