Brave New Spirits ‘Whisky Heroes (Batch 2) – Rise of the Ardphroaig Mutant’ Ardmore 2013 (10 year old) 55.9%
Tasting Note
Dist: Oct 2013 Btl: Aug 2024
Tasted: Sept 2024
The nose is actually quite subtle on the peat. Earthy and citric with barley, minerals, white fruit – apple, pear and a gentle medicinal note. With time a little more peat smoke emerges along with lemon and sweeter barley.
The palate is quite citric to begin with. Grilled nuts, earthy, slightly medicinal peat and grippy spices move in along with the alcohol. Seriously masked and intense finish, it feels like it’s more like 65% not 55%. Earthy, mouth-watering, mentholated green fruit finish. Damn, that mutant is killing me!
Water makes the nose fleshier and saltier. Lighter on the tar and peat and shoeing a touch more spirit character. The palate is sifter and displays more oak vanillins. Like the nose the intensity of peat is lessened but it’s still coastal, salty and astringent. Long, herbal, woody, grippy finish.
