Barrell Craft Spirits Bourbon Cask Finish Series: A Tail of Two Islands 54.11%

Tasting Note

Indiana: 5, 6, & 9 years old

Mayryland: 5 & 6 year old.

Derived mash bill: Corn: 73%, Rye: 23%, Malted Barley: 4%

Tasted: Feb 2024

The nose is waxy and oily. Very ‘trad’ bourbon, but there is a subtle peat smoke and astringent, herbal Worthy Park-esque rummy dried fruit in the background. Hints of grilled pineapple, peach, corn and gently sweet rye spice emerge. With time earth/ loam and green banana. A truly unique and stunning nose!

The palate is a little fresher and opens with citrus, corn and dark chocolate. Again, feels more ‘trad’ with dark rye spice, dark, baked fruits and bittering tannis. Then the gentle peat smoke comes through along with waxy/oily green fruit, citrus rind and astringent, herbal Jamaican fruit and a little burnt wood too for good measure! Long, slightly masked, lemon pastry, vanilla and sweet spice finish with lingering peppercorn and violets. Damn that’s good!

ater brings out citrus, pink grapefruit and pineapple. Possibly a little more rummy with subtler peat smoke. Hints of pink peppercorn, melon and almond. The palate is like the nose, more citric and rummy. Hints of rose pot pourri, chalky minerals and peppercorns. Long, slightly mentholated finish.

Description

In 2018, Barrell Craft Spirits produced a very limited release of our Tale of Two Islands Rum: A Jamaican Rum matured in peated Islay single malt barrels. To create it, the blending team filled previously used Islay Single Malt Whisky casks with a small amount of Barrell Rum Batch 001. For the Cask Finish: Tale of Two Islands blend, the team took the empty casks that held the Tale of Two Islands Rum and used them to finish a blend of straight bourbon whiskeys.
