For a more profound experience, the single vineyard wines from both estates are exceptional. The reputation of the south facing, limestone terroir of Chene Marchand has become world renowned. Crochet’s 60 year old vines perfectly portray, the pristine minerality and persistent drive of this cru, whilst the multifaceted Grand Chemarin, planted in 1988 provides a more exotic fruit profile. Although the Petit F, offers one of the most pure and genuine introductions to Pouilly Fume, the Redde family’s real raison d’etre, is undoubtedly to showcase the incredible diversity and full potential of the appellation’s great terroir. To this endeavour, they have gone to incredible lengths to clear land and plant vines in extreme locations, to follow this quest. Indeed, it took many years of persistent determination, before their incredible Les Bois de St Andelain was recognised by the INAO, although it is now regarded as one of the most important sites of the region. Coming from Saint-Martin-sur-Nouhain, the Les Toupees, was a new discovery for me this year, but equally irresistible. Silky and unctuous on the palate with tantalizingly ripe fruit and a fine saline minerality. Last but by no means least, Daniel Crochet’s sensational Sancerre Rouge, Sur le Clou would sit proudly alongside many of Burgundy’s finest Premier Cru.
