Hermitage Grand Champagne Cognac Vintage 1948 (59 year old) 44.4%
Tasting Note
Dist: 1948 Btl: 2007
Tasted: Nov 2020
The nose is delicate and rich, but not as dark as the 1960 vintage. Lightly herbal rancio of baled apple, violets, dried citrus peel, ginger, cinnamon and light treacle notes. Phenomenal depth!
The palate is light and delicate and amazingly quite apply fresh to begin with. Subtle mature oak vanillins and darker apple, dried citrus peel, cinnamon, treacle and spiced walnut and light chalky notes appear. All the while you are well aware of the citrus and alcohol which keeps the palate wonderfully vibrant. Very long with the fresh apple notes returning along with marzipan and dusty, slightly drying wood spice.
