Marvelous Muscat – A Boxler Beauty!

We have been singing the praises of the Boxler brilliance for decades. His sensational Grand Cru Rieslings from different plots on the Grand Cru Sommerberg and Brand are breathtaking. Furthermore, they are also wines which are a pure joy to drink, not just crafted to impress. Indeed, whichever cepage you select, be it a generic, a village, a Grand Cru or even a humble Edelzwicker, Boxler’s wines have real class, but also great buvabilite.
Despite his fame, there is one wine in Jean’s repertoire which remains a hidden gem! This is partly due to the limited production and also sadly, because in general the variety is often overlooked. It is the Muscat!
Quite why the Muscat does not enjoy the same popularity as the other Alsace varietals, could be due to various factors. It has been suggested that many consumers do not expect Muscat to be dry, associating it with the late picked variations, such as the delicious wines of Beaumes de Venise, or the fortified Australian Muscats. One thing is certain, all that glitters is not gold and there are undoubtedly many examples of dry Muscat which disappoint. As Jean Boxler once said, Muscat can be hell, but it can be heaven. The fact that there are different strains of Muscat, may not help, plus of course, control of yields, picking dates etc, with some examples being harsh and astringent. Indeed, the key to a great dry Muscat, is balance. At its best, a dry Muscat makes superb food pairings with a wide variety of dishes, from fish and poultry, delicately spicy dishes, cheeses and fruit sorbets. It is also the perfect partner to this season’s Asparagus.
Produced from a blend of Muscat d’Ottonel and Muscat d’Alsace, from the great terroirs of the Brand, Sommerberg, Dudenstein and Bolland, this marvellous Muscat possesses an alluring bouquet of delicate blossom, combined with a wonderful purity of fruit and lift of minerality with a fine, fresh finish.
