Finally for the reds, the single vineyard Cuculaia is another entity! A sensational vin de garde. This is a dazzling and beautiful wine. The Fabrizio Dionisio Cortona Syrah Cuculaia is richly concentrated and softly layered. Very dark and compact, it has a nose with strong “peppery” and bloody contours in addition to hints of plums and violets; in the mouth it is very dense but not cloying, the fruit is full and ripe, the development is continuous and balanced and the finish is very long and supported by smooth and silky tannic base. Black fruit, dark cherries and plum follows to tobacco, coffee, chocolate, leather and graphite on the back. The layers and complexity here are truly astounding. The spirit of the wine is modern and contemporary, no doubt, but this classic vintage plays up its winning assets: the intensity of Syrah and the generosity of Tuscany. Very long and unforgettable finale. Worthy of a true cru.
